02.11.10 - Artist Salon
Artist Salon Recap by Alli Rogers

I recently attended a Creative Arts Initiative artist salon hosted by the illustrious Don Chaffer. The purpose of the gathering was to bring artists together for a night of food, conversation, and community that we hoped would inspire and strengthen those who attended.

After eating some great food, the group circled up to engage in a directed discussion led by Don. Our conversation was centered around the topic of redemption and was provoked by some readings and recordings that Don had hand picked. We feasted on the creativity of some great storytellers from Billy Joel to J.D. Salinger. Most of the artists in the room had never met before, but as each piece of work revealed itself our hearts seemed to open to each other.

Our words came out timidly at first but it didn't take long for personal stories and thoughts to emerge and soon we were all sharing what was surfacing in our hearts and minds. We were not there to solve any problems or answer any questions, however, we were there to stir up the water, to dig deeper in to the depths of that longing that we all could not help but feel.

Artists are like deep sea divers who bring back for the rest of us the treasure they find beneath the surface. This constant diving is not easy work, and nights like this one provide something like a filled oxygen tank to keep searching, and to remember that no one is alone on their quest.
